Story of the week

An 11 year old boy in Choctaw recently “caught” an alligator in the pond near his house and by “caught” I mean that his grandma blew its brains out with her shotgun.

Watch the video.

There are a few things that flabbergast me about this story.

1) Why is everyone treating this like the kid is a hero? He chased an alligator and PICKED IT UP BY ITS TAIL like on TV. Does no one realize that he could have been seriously hurt? As in loosing an arm or leg? His response to this “I know that [it was dangerous], but I’ve seen plenty of those shows and I know where to grab it and what time and how.” OHHHHH. You’ve watched lots of TV shows where they wrangle alligators? I didn’t realize. Well in that case you’re definitely an expert so no big deal.

2) How are the News 9 reporters getting away with saying “knew what he seen on TV” and “swimmed and fished”? Come on guys, act like you graduated from high school. Your reporting is not helping us make Oklahoma look cool.

3) Think about how this went down. The boy calls his grandma on her cell, says “hey grandma, I seen an alligator and I’m gonna go pick it up”. Grandma grabs a shotgun and runs down to the lake. The alligator is about to bite the kid’s leg off and the grandma puts a bullet clean through its head. DOES NO ONE SEE THAT THE GRANDMA SHOT IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE 11 YEAR OLD? Grandma must be a pretty proud member of the NRA if she has the skills to shoot the 6 inch head of an alligator lunging for her grandsons leg. They should make a movie about this or something.

Cacti, almost as funny as buffalo

Alex and I got to spend the weekend in Scottsdale and it was fantastic! We spent some time hiking in the desert….

…where I took pictures of funny looking cacti. SO I decided the only logical thing to do would be to have a CACTI NAMING CONTEST. I know, totally sweet right? Alex thinks I am really weird for doing this so you all have to show him by submitting lots of funny names. Okay? Okay, good. Now that we’re all on the same page, I’ll provide one freebie/example.

Is my underwear showing?

Everyone see how this works? Great. After I get some submissions, I’m going to pick the best ones and you will have the incredible honor of being featured on OKLAHOMA LOVE. Not enough incentive for you? How about, the next time I go out with you I will buy you a beer? Still not enough? I can also offer a jar of almond butter, some fresh tomatoes from my garden and best of all, ONE FULL DAY hanging out with Millie. Hows that for some incentive?

Buffalo are funny

Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, and the speed limit’s 75.

Took some time to nurse my emotional wounds and spend time with the family back on the east coast this weekend (happy birthday Ry!!). I had lots of time to think while sitting in traffic on I-95 and have decided I am ready to forgive and forget and head back to good old Oklahoma. Since I never got a chance to post about the Wichita mountain wildlife refuge, I decided this would be a great “I forgive you post” to remind me just how great Oklahoma is.

Last Monday, Alex and I drove the “scenic route” from Quartz Mountain to the wildlife refuge.

Very scenic.

As we drove up to the refuge, I couldn’t contain my excitement. Having played Oregon trail many, many times as a child I was ready to buy supplies, caulk the wagon, and ford the river. (As a side note, I know the Oregon trail went through Kansas and not Oklahoma but it’s pretty much the same topography, right?) Luckily for me the refuge was even better than playing Oregon Trail. I know, I know, you’re asking yourself, how could anything be better than Oregon Trail? I think the pictures I took speak for themselves.

It was like we were in the Oregon Trail except no one died of cholera! Amazing! This is hands down one of the best places in Oklahoma and a legitimate reason to come visit (I’m talking to you Alli). I am planning on bringing all visitors to this magical place. Maybe next time we’ll even stop to feed the prairie dogs and my life will be complete.
